The Lovebirds

Recently we watched The Lovebirds starring Issa Rae and Kumail Ali Nanjiani and it was so funny we cried, our stomachs hurt from laughing. At one point we even had to stop the film and stand in the middle of the living room, throw our heads back and really get the laughs out, deep long belly laughs as we doubled over and clutched at each other. Suffice to say the film is hilarious, absurd, ridiculously funny. So refreshing and heartening too, to experience cinema starring a black woman and a brown man as the romantic leads and to have them be central to the story instead of just token characters. We love Issa Rae and Kumail Ali Nanjiani, they’re two of our favourite entertainers. What a great movie.

Achieving Greatness

People will always criticize. The difference between a successful person and an average person is how much criticism they can take. Average people cannot take much criticism, so they remain average all their lives. They fail to be leaders. Average people live in fear of what someone else might say or think of them, so they live their lives going along and getting along with all of the other average people.

People are always critical of other people. If people are criticizing you, at least they’ve noticed you. You’ve given them something to talk about. You’ve given them something to break the boring monotony of their lives. Be worried if no one is criticizing you. The only thing worse than being criticized is not being criticized.

Most people feel safer in the herd of the average, living in fear of being criticized or being different. Most people find it easier to be average, to be normal, to hide, doing exactly what the herd does, just going along just to get along. The fear of being criticized is the biggest fear of most people. It is the fear of ostracism, the fear of being different, of standing outside of the herd. Many people just join the herd and hide inside it because of fear. That is the reason so few people ever achieve greatness.

If you can learn to handle criticism, you learn something valuable for your life. Some people will love you no matter what you do, some people will dislike you regardless of your efforts, and some people don’t care either way. Your job is to ignore the people who will never like you and do your best with the rest. That’s it.

Who Would Have Ever

Throwback to when I was thirteen weeks pregnant with Asha. Who would have ever thought that a year and a half later we would have a beautiful baby girl who would take her first steps on her first birthday in the middle of a pandemic requiring worldwide quarantine and enforced period of social distancing. What a time to be alive. I encourage you all to use this unprecedented situation as an opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones. This is your chance to learn about each other, appreciate each other and be thankful. Take this opportunity to show love to one another and help each other. Take this opportunity to be creative, be compassionate and learn something new. We can’t always control what happens to us but we can control our reactions. Together we’ve got this. Humanity historically has dealt with worse and pulled through.

Deja Voom 2.0

So excited for this. Was super bummed to miss the inauguration of this festival last year Dylan said it was amazing. Thrilled to get to go this year and to bring Asha, it’s basically the perfect way to experience a festival and the perfect first festival experience for Asha. Also thrilled to get to bring Eric and Sarah as our special VIP guests especially since we failed to attend their epic farflung fairytale wedding on the Faroe Islands last year. Gonna be fire to have them there. They’re trying to get pregnant so Sarah isn’t partying so she’s the perfect sitter for Asha while me and the boys rage from stage to stage. I was even going to get to play a half hour set as NIGHT NURSE opening for ill.Gates at one of the side stages but then I wasn’t. Was real exciting for a second there but the Lorin giveth and the Lorin taketh away as Dylan says. Still going to be awesome though, just slightly less awesome without NIGHT NURSE.
